Body Mass Index • Health AnalysisAdvanced BMI Calculator: Your Health Scorecard
In the journey of fitness, knowing where you stand is the first step. Body Mass Index (BMI) is the global standard used by the World Health Organization (WHO) to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
Calculator Aangan’s Premium BMI Tool goes beyond simple division. It features a dual-unit system (Metric & Imperial) and provides an Ideal Weight Range suggestion, helping you set realistic fitness goals.
Understanding BMI Categories
Your BMI number places you in one of the following health zones. Understanding this is crucial for your heart health, diabetes risk, and overall longevity.
| BMI Range | Category | Health Risk |
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Risk of nutritional deficiency and osteoporosis. |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | Normal Weight | Healthy Range. Lowest risk of lifestyle diseases. |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Moderate risk. Time to focus on diet and cardio. |
| 30.0 and Above | Obese | High risk of Type 2 Diabetes, High BP, and Heart Disease. |
Note for Indians: According to the Asian BMI Standard, a BMI over 23 is considered overweight due to higher visceral fat risks in Asian populations.
What is "Ideal Weight"?
Many people ask, "What should I weigh for my height?"
Our calculator performs a Reverse BMI Calculation. It takes the healthy BMI range (18.5 to 24.9) and your height to calculate the exact weight window you should aim for.
- If you are Overweight: Aim for the upper limit of the Ideal Weight range first.
- If you are Underweight: Focus on muscle gain to reach the lower limit.
Limitations of BMI
While BMI is excellent for the general population, it has limitations for specific groups:
- Athletes & Bodybuilders: Muscle is denser than fat. A bodybuilder might have a high BMI (Overweight category) but low body fat. For them, Body Fat Percentage is a better metric.
- Pregnant Women: BMI is not applicable during pregnancy. Please use our Pregnancy Due Date Calculator and consult your doctor for weight gain guidelines.
- Elderly: Slightly higher BMI in older adults can sometimes be protective against bone fractures.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. How is BMI calculated?
The formula is simple: Weight (kg) ÷ Height (m)².
For the Imperial system (Lbs/Inches), the formula is: [Weight (lbs) ÷ Height (in)²] × 703. Our tool handles these conversions automatically.
2. Can I use this for children?
This calculator is designed for Adults (18+ years). For children and teenagers, BMI is interpreted differently (using Percentiles based on age and gender), as they are still growing.
3. I am "Normal" but have a belly. Am I healthy?
This is called "Skinny Fat." You might have a normal BMI but high visceral fat (fat around organs). Focus on strength training and protein intake to improve body composition, even if your weight stays the same.
4. How often should I check my BMI?
Checking once every 2 weeks is sufficient. Daily weight fluctuations are normal (due to water retention) and do not reflect true fat loss or gain.
