CGPA to Percentage Calculator: The Ultimate Student Tool
Academic grading systems can be confusing. While schools (CBSE/ICSE) and modern universities use the 10-point CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) system, many job applications and college admissions still ask for your marks in Percentage.
Calculator Aangan’s Advanced Converter bridges this gap. Whether you are a CBSE student, a Mumbai University graduate, or studying abroad, this tool handles all conversion standards with 100% accuracy.
How is Percentage Calculated from CGPA?
There isn’t one single global formula. Different boards use different multipliers.
1. The CBSE Standard (9.5x)
This is the most common method used in India for Class 10 and 12.
Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5 Example: If your CGPA is 8.0, then Percentage = 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%
2. The University Standard (10x)
Many universities like Mumbai University, Pune University, and VTU often use a simple 10x multiplier or have their own grading tables.
Formula: Percentage = CGPA × 10 Example: If your CGPA is 8.0, then Percentage = 8.0 × 10 = 80%
Our calculator allows you to select your standard from the dropdown menu so you never get a wrong result.
Grading System Reference

- 60% – 74.99%: First Class (Letter Grade: A)
- 50% – 59.99%: Second Class (Letter Grade: B)
- 40% – 49.99%: Pass Class (Letter Grade: C)
- Below 40%: Fail (Letter Grade: F)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Why is the multiplier 9.5 and not 10 for CBSE?
CBSE analyzed marks of students for years and found that the average percentage of students scoring ‘A1’ grade was roughly 95%. Dividing 95 by 10 (the max CGPA) gives 9.5. Hence, 9.5 became the standard multiplier to normalize scores.
2. Can I convert Percentage back to CGPA?
Yes! Click on the “Percentage to CGPA” tab at the top of our calculator. Enter your percentage (e.g., 85%), and it will divide it by the multiplier (default 9.5) to give you the CGPA (e.g., 8.9).
3. Does this work for Engineering (B.Tech) / MBA?
Yes, but engineering colleges often have specific rules. For example, VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) uses: Percentage = (CGPA – 0.75) × 10. You can use the “Custom Multiplier” option in our tool if your college has a unique formula.
4. Is this valid for Resume/CV?
Absolutely. Converting your CGPA to percentage helps recruiters understand your academic standing instantly, as Percentage is a universally understood metric in India.
